Training across the academy: The impact of R&D funding on graduate students

This paper measures the impact of external R&D funding on career trajectory and research productivity graduate students across divisions life sciences, math & physical engineering, social sciences psychology. We contribute to understanding production science by examining training regimen for students. exploit variation between 3,678 awardees honorable mentions U.S. National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program. find consistent evidence that award increases degree completion, placement in a post-doctoral or academic position, impact, network size. further explore role advisor this process does not disrupt apprenticeship model, but instead, student's interaction with their advisor.
